Have you seen the interviews with The Daily Mobsters?

We have done quite a few very fun interviews and podcasts based around graphic novels and comic books this month, but we are not done! We have Al Mega (of Comic Crusaders) coming TODAY (Wednesday, August 19th at 12PM to 1PM PST). Both Jack and I hope you join us for a fun-filled interview, and then August 25th on the Catch Da Craze podcast with Samuel Vera at 5PM to 6PM PST. We have been so busy making The Daily Mobster cinematic graphic novel, we had very few chances to chat to fans, other creators and anyone else to see how they feel about our world, characters, design, story and visuals. However, with enough coffee, we are more than happy to discuss, explore and look back at what makes our cinematic graphic novel unique. Let us know your thoughts in the comments, interview chat or contact us directly!

Slavik and Jack appear on a "A Drink With Brink" and have a lot of fun introducing The Daily Mobster to a new fan!

One of the many things that we like to discuss internally are the moral questions and the answers that we are able to extract from our characters. Since there are so many mobsters with different personalities, characters, wants and needs, to make the graphic novel feel fruitful, we try to look at otherwise black and white situations and see them from different points of view, even ones that we as creators disagree with. Within those perspectives we usually find something that grabs our attention and highlights the character that we are exploring. Sometimes it is so random and intriguing, that I don’t think we could have come up with it in the first place. It almost seemed like winning a mini-lottery. However, I do think that having three dedicated minds that bring their own perspectives helps a lot in that process. The bouncing of ideas and thoughts as a discussion has led to many characters developing their core.

When approaching the visuals in the later chapters, my style of thinking about light changed from trying to achieve a noir look, to exploring minimalist lighting to more complex lighting techniques. Every scene has been asking for something different every time and I still think about the first train tracks scene and how I would have lit it differently if I had to do it today.

Essentially it only has one true light source, the moon and when the two trains come at specific times. Otherwise, there is very little to work with, though I think in time I’ll do an exercise of reimagining.

The Daily Mobster cinematic graphic novel returns to the AussieVerse podcast.

One of the things that I feel I am really taking a strong liking to, is the lettering component to the comics. I think early on Jack was very sensitive to this element of story-telling and I wasn’t really focusing on it. However, in time I began to appreciate the little nuances of different fonts, sizes, whether we make something bold or italic. It really helps with bringing the nuance in feeling the words in the context of the story and now I am giving each instance quite a lot of thought and understanding. This is probably the biggest element that improves the understanding of our world after the imagery is complete.

Well, till next time!
