New Issue day is here! We are so excited to release issue 5 of The Daily Mobster, our new cinematic graphic novel, the gritty noir comic about gangsters and the mafia set in 1920s-1930s Port Noir. It’s hard to believe we have five issues, nearly 600 pages of story, hundreds of frames and several new characters to fall in love with (or hate)!
When we first started imagining the Daily Mobster world and what it might look like and how the story might play out, I don’t think we had any idea how robust and grand this noir universe would feel or just how cinematic of an experience it could be. Port Noir and its characters have grown into a living, breathing, gritty noir city of its own and we are so proud of each character, b-story, joke, action scene, and issue on its own. Who knew writing about gangsters, crime, kingpins and the mafia could lead to some absurd humor and a touch of the super natural? Our technique and skill has improved with each issue (at least we believe so, and we hope you are enjoying each step forward in the story). As creators, and ex-hollywood artists, we truly want to bring you not only something fresh and unique without the sanded down edges of a studio product, but something that we, ourselves would want to read.
The genre bouncing is one of our favorite aspects of The Daily Mobster and its cinematic graphic novel way of telling stories. Some pages its a proper gritty crime noir, complete with striped shadows and a question of who did me wrong? Another page it's a comedic car chase, bank robbery or witty banter between crooked friends. And even on another page, its a mysterious, almost horror-esque attack or meeting in the shadows. While at its core, it's still a noir and a mobster/mafia story, we love to explore what different genres and tones have to offer to the story. Life is complex, themes are complex and so we feel it's the best way to provide a fully rounded reading experience. Some of our favorite character building moments are totally absurd and comedic such as Ed, The Editor arguing with his Dad at the lunch counter, and the cuteness of the Kid interjecting into “adult conversations,” or the relatable food banter between Hank and Sal in the dock’s car chase, or the annoying customer relationship Señor Suspendador has with struggling Gazpacho truck, and of course the love-hate relationship Uncle Leo has with his nephew Mickey. Comedy provides us a way to explore what makes our characters laugh, become annoyed, or situational humor of even the darkest situations. Even gangsters, mobsters and criminals can be silly!
As writers, we also think that horror and thriller are one of the strongest pillars of our storytelling in The Daily Mobster comic. While it may not be monsters and hellish slasher villains, the violence rooted in very real world stories that comes with the mobster and gangster territory, or growing up as a worried child, are very real and give the threat real stakes. Horror is a great way to show that these characters have real concerns, fears, and anxieties as well as to establish that this world has real threats lurking in every alley, or dark shadow.
And of course, action. What noir mobster story is complete with some chases, shoot outs or violent interrogations? While you may have enjoyed the cinematic nature of the car chase, the nail-biting horse race or the bank shoot out in this issue - you’ll be very excited to know the biggest action sequence yet will be coming in issue six! Leo and the gang try to pull of the grandest heist Port Noir has ever seen and we hope you’ll be as thrilled to read it as we had fun making it.

Until the next drop, we hope you enjoy our indie comic and if you like what you see, please, the best way to help us is to share it with all your friends!
